Kansas City Gets Sprint 4G

Mobile phone users in Kansas City can now enjoy Sprint 4G phones services as the city becomes one of 33 other markets where Sprint has launched 4G.

The Kansas 4G coverage takes in Kansas City, Shawnee, Overland Park, Lee’s Summit, Independence and the Northland. Sprint says more cellphone towers will be converted to operate 4G services throughout the summer – giving extended coverage through the rest of the market.

Phone users can use the new service with either a data modem or the new HTC EVO 4G phone.

Qik Confirms Free Video Calls for HTC EVO 4G Phone

Qik has confirmed its app for making free video chat calls will continue to be free on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G phone when it’s released this week.

Some mobile phone sites had suggested a $4.99 monthly fee would be needed to use the standard video service but Qik has clarified that the standard service will remain free.

However, Qik has made it clear they will be charging for an “advanced premium service”. Details of features and subscription charges won’t be announced until Sprint launches the new 4G phone.

Sprint 4G Coverage Map

Quick tip for 4G phone users (or those thinking of switching to Sprint 4G).

Sprint has a pretty good 4G coverage map.

The map allows you to enter a location and check instantly whether that location is within the Sprint 4G coverage area.

Sprint 4G Data Plans Will Cost More For HTC EVO

HTC EVO 4G phone users will be charged an extra $10 a month for their mobile data plans, according to Sprint.

The extra charge is on top of the standard mobile data plan costs. Sprint says the charge is being made because 4G phone users likely to consume much more bandwidth and data than regular users. But Sprint spokesperson John Taylor admitted on his blog that the charge will not just be for those using the HTC EVO in a 4G coverage area – it’s specific to the device, regardless of whether 3G or 4G is being used.

He added, “Because the phone has a faster processor, a huge 4.3 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camcorder / camera, we expect you will be using a lot more data than you would with our other devices. These features will give you capabilities that have previously never been available on a wireless device and we think they provide a premium experience. (Remember, this is the world’s first 3G / 4G Android phone.)”.

Release Date and Price Confirmed for HTC EVO 4G Phone

The official release date is June 4 with a confirmed price of $199 after $100 mail-in rebate.
